Kerala State Govt has approved Urban Beautification Scheme.

The approval of the Urban Beautification Scheme signifies a commitment to enhancing the aesthetic and functional aspects of urban areas in the state. Such initiatives not only contribute to the overall visual appeal of cities but also improve the quality of life for residents. This scheme has the potential to make Kerala’s urban spaces more vibrant, sustainable, and welcoming for both residents and visitors.

The state administration has given preliminary approval to the ‘Urban Rejuvenation and Beautification Program,’ which was included in the state budget for fiscal year 2023-24. The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board has approved a budget of Rs 1 billion for this effort, which would be executed in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode.

The focus points of the city beautification effort in Thiruvananthapuram will be Chalai, Fort, and the corridor spanning from Kowdiar to Fort. The municipal corporation and the regional town planner’s office have held preliminary discussions to develop a comprehensive beautification blueprint for these districts. The proposed improvements include improving pedestrian walkways, increasing street lights, and reorganizing overhead wires.

Finance Minister K N Balagopal stated during his budget address that he intends to launch an improvement programme for the six main municipalities in Kerala. This programme includes, among other things, preserving heritage zones and their surrounds, improving pedestrian infrastructure, outfitting public areas and recreational zones, and raising sanitary standards.

The strategic plan will include an overarching vision for the city, goals, best solutions, considerations for integrating public aspirations, implementation methodologies, and intervention cost estimates.
